Health & Safety TrainingWhen an emergency strikes, every second counts. Knowing how to help can mean the difference between life and death. That's why the American Red Cross urges everyone to be prepared to respond to life-threatening situations by taking Health & Safety classes.
Food & Nutrition ServicesIn collaboration with the Visiting Nurse Services Meals on Wheels program, Red Cross volunteers and staff provide more than 1,000 nutritionally balanced meals a day for the elderly and homebound in Monroe County.
In times of disaster we can provide thousands of meals for the community.
Our vocational training program in partnership with B.O.C.E.S. #1 and #2, Rochester Educational Opportunity Center, and other agencies whose clients are academically and physically challenged, teaches skills that enrich and help our volunteers lead productive lives.
Blood ServicesThe Greater Rochester Red Cross is affiliated with the New York-Penn Blood Services Region, one of the three largest regions in the American Red Cross Biomedical Services system. This region provides blood products to approximately 101 hospitals throughout upstate New York. The New York-Penn Region was formed in July of 1994 from the consolidation of three Upstate New York Blood Services Regions. Started as a war relief effort to provide lifesaving blood for soldiers during World War II, the blood program grew to serve civilian needs after the war. In 1948, the Rochester Regional Blood Center was formed as Unit No. 1 of the American Red Cross National Blood Program. Today, American Red Cross Blood Services collects and distributes nearly half of the nation's blood supply. We strive to provide the safest, most reliable blood products possible. Our volunteers and staff are committed to meeting the blood needs of patients near or far and proudly work under the American Red Cross name.

Disaster ServicesDid you know that American Red Cross disaster volunteers respond to emergencies whenever and wherever they strike 365 days a year? Mission-focused volunteers work to ensure that emergency or disaster-related needs of the community are being met.
When a disaster strikes, Red Cross volunteers are on the scene providing shelter, food and counseling -- caring relief, day and night. If needed, they set up disaster shelters, conduct damage assessments, meet the immediate needs of disaster victims - services which are provided on a person to person basis.
Youth Volunteer ProgramsThe Red Cross Youth Leadership Program is a multicultural program focusing on teaching leadership and life skills and community service to African American, Hispanic and other underserved teens in grades 9 – 11 attending schools in the Rochester City School District. Adult volunteers facilitate training workshops and each student has the opportunity to be matched with a mentor. The program runs during the school year. National Disaster Relief WorkWednesday, October 22, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2020General volunteer requirements. Have 2 to 3 weeks to donate your time. Capable of working under difficult conditions and under high levels of stress. If you can endure hot temperatures, are able to carry at least 50 lbs, and share living quarters in a shelter. Work as a team and can tolerate ambiguous situations. You must be ready to accept placement anywhere within 12 to 24 hours of training completion.

Volunteers may conduct damage assessments. Experienced volunteers may choose further training for national disaster relief efforts.

Although chartered by Congress to provide relief to disaster victims and service to members and their families of the Armed Forces, the American Red Cross is not a government agency.
Accountability and integrity are the hallmarks of how our Chapter conducts its business. We are a volunteer-driven organization led by more than 2,000 volunteers and have 70 paid employees. We recognize the value and role of other community-based organizations in fulfilling our mission and we partner with them to expand the impact of all humanitarian organizations.

Red Cross Deploys 4 Volunteers & ERV to Help Flood VictimsThe Greater Rochester Red Cross deployed four volunteers to Gowanda to help with disaster relief efforts caused by the flooding.
Marty and Alan Durbin, residents of Webster, left from the Greater Rochester Chapter, 50 Prince Street at 10 a.m. to help with casework, which is the process to provide assistance to residence who have been affected by the disaster and need immediate help with food, shelter, clothing and more. Later this afternoon Norma Clement and Annette Nohe deployed in the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle, which was loaded with 150 Clean Up Kits to distribute to residents in the affected area. Clean up Kits contain buckets, sponges, mops, towels, bleach and other materials, items that are essential to residents that were affected by the flooding in Chautauqua County
“Marty and Alan Durbin will be working out of the Gowanda Elementary School, which has been set up as an American Red Cross Service Center,” said Richard King, Lead Disaster & Emergency Services Volunteer at the Greater Rochester Red Cross. “The Durbins, Norma and Annette will work alongside fellow Red Cross volunteers in the Buffalo region to help the many people that have been displaced by the flooding and help restore normalcy to their lives.”
