Disaster Action Team MemberWednesday, October 22, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2020Volunteers respond to local disasters such as house fires to help provide the essentials of living between the disaster and the next day - food, clothing, shelter (all free of charge). Volunteers may conduct damage assessments. Experienced volunteers may choose further training for national disaster relief efforts.
National Disaster Relief WorkWednesday, October 22, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2020General volunteer requirements. Have 2 to 3 weeks to donate your time. Capable of working under difficult conditions and under high levels of stress. If you can endure hot temperatures, are able to carry at least 50 lbs, and share living quarters in a shelter. Work as a team and can tolerate ambiguous situations. You must be ready to accept placement anywhere within 12 to 24 hours of training completion.
Donations for Disaster VictimsThe Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross is supported by the generous contributions from individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations in our community. Although chartered by Congress to provide relief to disaster victims and service to members and their families of the Armed Forces, the American Red Cross is not a government agency. Accountability and integrity are the hallmarks of how our Chapter conducts its business. We are a volunteer-driven organization led by more than 2,000 volunteers and have 70 paid employees. We recognize the value and role of other community-based organizations in fulfilling our mission and we partner with them to expand the impact of all humanitarian organizations.
Red Cross Deploys 4 Volunteers & ERV to Help Flood VictimsThe Greater Rochester Red Cross deployed four volunteers to Gowanda to help with disaster relief efforts caused by the flooding. Marty and Alan Durbin, residents of Webster, left from the Greater Rochester Chapter, 50 Prince Street at 10 a.m. to help with casework, which is the process to provide assistance to residence who have been affected by the disaster and need immediate help with food, shelter, clothing and more. Later this afternoon Norma Clement and Annette Nohe deployed in the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle, which was loaded with 150 Clean Up Kits to distribute to residents in the affected area. Clean up Kits contain buckets, sponges, mops, towels, bleach and other materials, items that are essential to residents that were affected by the flooding in Chautauqua County “Marty and Alan Durbin will be working out of the Gowanda Elementary School, which has been set up as an American Red Cross Service Center,” said Richard King, Lead Disaster & Emergency Services Volunteer at the Greater Rochester Red Cross. “The Durbins, Norma and Annette will work alongside fellow Red Cross volunteers in the Buffalo region to help the many people that have been displaced by the flooding and help restore normalcy to their lives.” Those who would like to help the Red Cross aid victims of disaster can call the Greater Rochester Red Cross at 585-241-4417, toll free at 1-800-RED-CROSS, or visit us at www.RochesterRedCross.org.
