Community-Based MentoringCommunity-based mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship, where Bigs and Littles get together on their own to share fun activities they both enjoy. The Community-based program allows a great deal of flexibility in meeting at the time, place and frequency that meets the schedules of the Big and Little. On average, this is generally twice a month, for two or three hours at a time. Getting together is a great time for both the Big and the Little. It doesn't require a special occasion or expensive activities; just a few hours every month to share the simple things you already like to do. Things like shooting hoops, playing a board game, sharing a pizza, taking a walk on the beach or in the park, or just hanging out and talking. Additionally, there are numerous agency sponsored events offered to our Bigs and Littles throughout the year, like picnics, fishing or tickets to sporting events or the theatre. Most of these activities are free, and some are offered as donations or at special reduced prices by generous local sponsors or donors.
School-Based MentoringThe school-based is designed to foster youth's academic development as well as improve social skills. Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring at the designated school - either for lunch or as part of an after school program with some of our partner organizations such as the YMCA and R'Club. School-based Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week - generally at the same time and place - to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues, just as friends do.
