LiteracyCMAA's Literacy Department employs a comprehensive approach to literacy with diverse programming that targets families and individuals. The department offers classes at all levels and many different times throughout the day and evening to accommodate the varying schedules of its clients. The Literacy Department served a total of 495 students.
EmploymentThe Employment Department helps immigrants, refugees , and other residents of Chicago's Uptown community achieve economic self-sufficiency through comprehensive employment services. CMAA specializes in placing those who have the hardest time finding jobs, especially individuals who do not speak English and have cultural barriers to overcome. CMAA also works with Uptown's large homeless population to help find employment. The quality of the Employment Department even attracts many native-born Americans who take advantage of the job services available. In addition to job placement, staff evaluates work skills and interface with employers to make sure CMAA clients fit their needs. 1,543 individuals were served in 2001.
Social ServicesPerhaps the most diverse department at CMAA, Social Services helps immigrant and refugee families face the many issues that are encountered as new Americans. Those who speak little or no English need friendly advice, assistance and translation as they face problems. For almost any problem newly-arrived immigrants and refugees might face, staff provide counseling in several languages and dialects to match the client with the appropriate source of information or community resource. In 2001, Social Services assisted over 5,000 individuals.
YouthCMAA's Youth Department offers a variety of academic, social, and educational programs and is comprised of eight components with over 100 active participants. The Youth Department operates daily and serves youth ages 5-18 years old. CMAA has created a safe and healthy environment for youth to excel. The Youth Department focuses on educational assistance, leadership skills, teambuilding strategies, career explorations, cultural celebrations, field trips, and also provides opportunities for youth to become involved in community issues.

Citizenship and ImmigrationWhile many immigrants and refugees would like to become American citizens and participate fully in American life, they are often met with hurdles to overcome. Lower levels of English ability and lower levels of education make learning the skills necessary for citizenship much harder. Unskilled workers with lower incomes spend more time on the job to support their families and often have little time to improve their personal skills. CMAA helps seniors and individuals with low English proficiency and others with challenges attain citizenship. CMAA Citizenship Department also registered 92 of its students to become registered voters. The Citizenship Department stresses that becoming a U.S. citizen is only the first step of a process that includes becoming informed voters and active community members.
