While many immigrants and refugees would like to become American citizens and participate fully in American life, they are often met with hurdles to overcome. Lower levels of English ability and lower levels of education make learning the skills necessary for citizenship much harder. Unskilled workers with lower incomes spend more time on the job to support their families and often have little time to improve their personal skills. CMAA helps seniors and individuals with low English proficiency and others with challenges attain citizenship. CMAA Citizenship Department also registered 92 of its students to become registered voters. The Citizenship Department stresses that becoming a U.S. citizen is only the first step of a process that includes becoming informed voters and active community members.(more)
