Small network helping in a big wayWhen a child has been traumatized through physical or emotional abuse, they may not have the words to describe the pain. They may, however, be able to act out their situations or their feelings by simply playing with the wooden castle or the figures in the doll house. Community Youth Network, a not-for-profit agency based in Grayslake with a satellite office in Gurnee, offers individualized counseling for children dealing with abuse, attachment issues, trauma issues, truancy and singles or couples dealing with marital problems or anxiety, just to name a few. For kids, the play room at CYN is a great place to begin working things out. \"Play therapy comes from the basis that kids are playing out the issues going on in their lives,\" said Beth Struebing, a therapist for 20 years. She said using play therapy helps her get a glimpse into a child's life. One child, for example, didn't have the male figures interact with any others, while another child didn't have his figure interact with any other figure, showing he felt alone. \"Metaphorically, we can work on a whole different level through play,\" Struebing said. \"As a therapist, you are reminded always of the resiliency of the human spirit. It's good to help people see things differently.\" Helping others learn to cope with difficult situations is what CYN is all about. The agency is located at 18640 W. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, just east of Route 45. They opened in 1978 with one counselor and now have a staff of 14. They serve residents of Lake, McHenry, Cook and Kenosha counties through a team of licensed psychotherapists, social workers and counselors. They specialize in helping people deal with physical, sexual and emotional abuse, said Tom Schreiner, executive director. Last year, the organization saw over 500 cases of which 260 dealt with physical or mental abuse. \"We are one the premier providers of sexual abuse and trauma treatment in Lake County and northern Illinois,\" said Schreiner. Clients are referred through the schools, police, other social service agencies, courts or probation officers, and the Department of Children and Family Services. Once at CYN, a customized therapy strategy is developed based on the client's needs.
