%newline% This year nearly 60,000 callers to our Crisis Line will be reaching out for support and they will find it. One hundred volunteers, intern counselors and staff will interact professionally and with utmost caring and respect for every caller. Each call is filled with emotion and is often a life-changing moment for the caller, but also for the counselor. I am always in awe of the work, the caring and the dedication. However, I am never quite sure how to communicate the true meaning of crisis support.
%newline% The meaning of the work of Crisis Support Services is about caring, about professional response to a person in need and about making a difference in our community. But, what does the Crisis Line actually provide for our community?
%newline% The Crisis Line is an entry point for help and has become a significant provider of professional community mental health services. It is often a sustaining presence for those who are isolated or don't have a reliable source of support. For many, The Crisis Line means human contact and a sense of belonging in a society that may have rushed past them.
%newline% The persistently mentally ill have very limited opportunities for supportive counseling and almost none that are there 24 hours a day. The Crisis Line is often their support. The Crisis Line is there for folks in immediate crisis contemplating suicide or simply at the breaking point with nowhere to turn. Every call is confidential and must be treated as a bond of trust between the caller and the counselor.
%newline% Again, I am never quite certain how to say all that I feel about the mission and work of Crisis Support Services and our wonderful staff and volunteers. I do know for certain that it is all made possible through their dedication and yours our community partners and donors. Thank you for being part of the CSS community.
