Solving Global WarmingThe Environmental Law & Policy Center is actively engaged in activities to reduce global warming. Our work focuses on environmental solutions that can dramatically reduce carbon pollution. Midwest-focused solutions are critical. Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin account for 20% of the nationâ??s carbon pollution, with only 5% of the worldâ??s population. The Midwest alone is responsible for more global warming pollution than any country, except China, India, Russia and Japan. Thatâ??s because the Midwest has the largest concentration of old, dirty coal plants that produce large amounts of carbon dioxide which cause global warming, and because we ar the hub of the U.S. transportation industry. Learn more about global warming and how you can take action at GlobalWarmingsolutions.org, our comprehensive website focused on climate change in the Midwest.
Renewable Energy from Rural AmericaELPC believes in the potential of rural America to develop and produce clean, renewable energy. Our Farm Bill - Clean Energy Development Initiative focuses on clean energy diversification and independence, rural economic development, job creation, and improved environmental quality for all Americans.
Preserving Wisconsin's NorthwoodsThe Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest was recently identified as one of the \"10 most endangered national forests\" in the nation. It is one of the most heavily-logged national forests in the Eastern region (which stretches from Minnesota to Maine). At the cutting rate employed over the last 10 years, every single log-able acre would be cut in 45 years. The harmful impacts of such extensive logging on waterways, habitat and related natural resources and conservation goals are significant. ELPC is working through federal courts to protect this treasured resource. ELPC doesn't want logging to stop - just to be more balanced with environmental considerations. In so doing, we can continue logging employment where it makes sense, while also preserving the outdoor environment for the growing tourism industry.
Clean Cars for IllinoisIllinois and other Midwest states are moving to adopt tough new standards to reduce pollution, benefiting the regionâ??s health and reducing global warming pollution-while also improving the areaâ??s economy. Illinois has the opportunity to lead the Midwest in ensuring all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks will emit lower levels of global warming and other air pollutants while improving public health, and saving Illinois consumers money at the pump.
Advancing Smart TransportationAs Midwestern communities continue to grow, public officials propose new roads to alleviate increased traffic congestion. Unfortunately, studies have shown that building new roads increases rather than decreases the amount of traffic by allowing more commuters to choose driving over mass transit and by increasing urban sprawl. ELPC is working to promote the availability of mass transit options, encourage the repair of existing roads, and prevent the construction of unnecessary roads which inevitably results in a diminished quality of life for residents.
Help ELPC Win the 2009 Battle for a Greener Economy The twelve Midwest and Great Plains states where ELPC operates contain many of the key swing Senators and Representatives. They will have a disproportionate role in determining whether national global warming legislation is strong or weak. We live and work in the most pivotal region in the most important country in the world when it comes to solving our global warming problems. ELPC is intensifying our clean energy and global warming solutions work in these key swing states, and weâ??ll add staff both here and in Washington D.C. to work with the Midwest/Great Plains Senators and Representatives. Weâ??ve raised $150,000 in special funds from foundations to support this accelerated work, and weâ??re asking ELPC supporters to make matching contributions totaling $150,000 to enable us to hire key new staff.
A Green Agenda for WashingtonELPC President and Executive Director Howard Learner outlines the public policy changes that the Obama administration and the new Congress should acheive to grow the green economy and create a cleaner environment in this article on the Huffington Post.
Activists Back Drive for Illinois Clean Car ActActivists Back Drive for Illinois Clean Car Act Supporters hold rally in Chicago for anti-pollution bill in state legislature The Chicago Tribune - November 17, 2008 Supporters of the proposed Illinois Clean Car Act rallied Sunday in downtown Chicago with the hope that state legislators will pass a bill they say would help significantly decrease air pollution in Illinois. Advocates of the bill say it would promote the sale of fuel-efficient vehicles in Illinois and, by reducing the pollutants emitted by cars and trucks, would improve air quality and public health. Asthma and allergies, which are increasing among children, are exacerbated by poor air quality, health experts say.
Look for Winners in Solving Global WarmingDes Moines Register - December 10, 2008 Guest Column by Howard A. Learner Solving our global-warming problems is the moral, economic, policy, political and technological challenge of our times. Fortunately, there are smart, clean renewable-energy and energy-efficiency developments and clean-car innovation strategies that are good for the economy, create new green jobs and improve the environment.
