CounselingFamily & Individual Counseling provides counseling services to thousands of individuals, families and couples who require assistance in overcoming difficulties in their lives. Services are provided at any of our nine counseling locations throughout metro-Atlanta. As an alternative, counseling-by-phone is available.
Adoption ServicesEach year, our agency helps thousands of individuals and couples navigate through the challenging adoption process. We also empower prospective parents by conducting a home study, providing support services after they bring their child home, and offering informational seminars and classes. We also provide Adoption Search and Reunion, a state-wide program that provides services to birth parents, adopted persons, adoptive parents and siblings. Services include non-identifying information to adult adopted persons and parents of minors, search services to adult adopted persons and adult siblings, registration services to birth parents, and counseling and intermediary services. In addition, The Georgia Center for Resources and Support is a statewide project funded by the Georgia Department of Human Resources and operated by Families First and Bethany Christian Services. Foster CareThere are thousands of children in the foster care system in Georgia, and not nearly enough homes to provide the temporary love and care they desperately need. Families First provides foster families the tools they need to be successful including: free training, support services, 24 hour accessibility to our licensed social workers, free yearly physicals for the child(ren) and five days of respite. In addition, when adoption becomes an option, Families First can support foster parents through the adoption process. In addition, The Georgia Center for Resources and Support is a statewide project funded by the Georgia Department of Human Resources and operated by Families First and Bethany Christian Services. The mission of the Center is to establish a seamless, comprehensive support network of post placement services to strengthen adoptive and foster families throughout Georgia. Residential ServicesFamilies First provides a safe and structured haven for those children who do not have the necessary love and/or support from their family members. Our agency maintains several group homes for boys and girls aged 13 to 16. In addition, Families First's Independent/ Transitional Living provides an array of services for young adults aged 18 to 21 who are transitioning out of foster care. Families First also operates two special group homes: Weaver Gardens is a transitional living home that provides efficiency apartments for mothers aged 17 to 26 who have one child less than one year old. The goal is to help these young mothers learn parenting and life skills and develop long term economic independence. Second Chance Home offers eight teenaged mothers and their babies just that ...a second chance. Girls aged 13 to 18 have an opportunity to complete their education and learn to become self-sufficient mothers.
Services for Homeless FamiliesFamilies First community-based housing enable residents to make a smooth transition into their new neighborhood, and helps them to adjust and succeed as a member of the community. Delowe Village is a community-based life skills program for disabled women and their children who are chronically homeless. Shelter-A-Family is designed to assist families who are chronically or long-term homeless with disabilities and life challenges. Supportive services and permanent and long term housing are provided. Quality of Life (AHA) provides case management and supportive services are provided to former residents of the Atlanta Housing Authority Public Housing. These former residents have been relocated to mixed-income use communities.
Administrative Assistance Monday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Assist with administrative tasks such as mailing preparation, copying, data entry or meeting preparation. Opportunities may exist for regular scheduling, but most assignments will occur sporadically as requested by staff. Administrative assistance will occur during business hours at Families First’s Main Office in midtown or at one of our satellite offices.
Birthday Party Host to “Sponsor a Child’s Birthday”Monday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Provide a birthday cake and gifts for a child who would otherwise not have a celebration. Sponsors needed for sibling groups and children of all ages. Companies or groups may also choose to sponsor a whole family’s birthday celebrations throughout the year. Delivery to the family’s residence will be arranged by the staff member working with the family.
FAST VolunteerMonday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Volunteers are needed to assist the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program at schools throughout the metro-area. These eight-week sessions are designed to increase student’s academic performance, improve student behavior and increase parental involvement with their child’s school. Volunteer duties include set-up, food service and clean-up, supervision of students and siblings at play, and assisting family activities and projects. Dinner is provided. An excellent volunteer opportunity for those who enjoy interacting with children of diverse backgrounds and ages! Spanish speakers are encouraged to sign up.
In-kind DonationsMonday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009You can help support families in need by donating new or gently used items. Needed items include gift cards, computers, new baby clothing and supplies, car seats, books, toys and school supplies for children of all ages. We cannot accept used clothing or furniture. Items must be in good condition and meet all safety standards. This is an excellent opportunity for corporate, school or neighborhood groups.
Math TutorMonday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009A math tutor is needed for a 4th grade foster child in Conyers. Tutors must have prior experience working with children and appropriate skill level for the subject requested. Tutors must also submit to a complete background screening. Assignment can start as soon as appropriate paperwork is completed.
Foster Care Appreciation PartyMonday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Volunteers needed to assist with our annual Foster Parent Appreciation party on Saturday, May 31 from 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM at Clayton County International Park. This annual event celebrates our foster parents and the Foster Parent of the Year is honored. Volunteers are needed for set-up, food service and clean-up. Additionally, donations such as gift cards, event tickets or gift baskets are being accepted for raffles and giveaways for our foster families.

Culture Camp VolunteerMonday, April 14, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Annual summer camp for internationally adopted children at Lake Allatoona in White, GA. Assist with daily activities and events. Additionally, donations of snacks, drinks and craft or activity supplies for 70+ kids are being accepted. Dates needed are June 4-8, 2008.
Childcare for Foster KidsThursday, April 17, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Volunteers needed to provide childcare for foster children at the monthly Foster Parent Association meeting, on the second Thursday of every month (7pm – 9pm). Up to 10 children will be in attendance, and they range in ages from babies to teens. Volunteers would need to undergo full background check and fingerprint screening before starting this assignment. Meetings are held at the DeKalb County DFACS office, 178 Sams Street, Decatur, GA 30030.
Teen Activity SupervisorThursday, April 17, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Adult needed to supervise and plan activities for 6 teen boys one afternoon a week at the Families First Main Office in midtown. This is an excellent opportunity for retired police, guidance counselors or educators. The boys are residents of one of Families First’s group homes. Volunteers would need to undergo full background check and fingerprint screening before starting this assignment.
Spring Fund AppealServices provided by Families First reach into neighborhoods throughout Georgia to help a friend, a relative, someone down the street who is ill, out of work, or in trouble. Chances are, Families First helps someone close to you. Families First is able to return an impressive 80 cents of each dollar it receives to our communities. Less than 21 cents out each dollar goes toward administrative costs. This figure is well below the Better Business Bureau guideline of 35 percent for charities. As you can see, giving to Families First is a smart investment! By investing in Families First, you invest in your community’s most valuable resource – families. Senior Adoption Support SpecialistIncumbent will provide assistance to staff in Special Needs Program and Unit at large; process adoption applications, studies and supervisory reports; compiles statistical data for monthly billing reports; tracks out-of-state contracts, provides clerical support to adoption staff and outstanding customer service; performs some intake and orientation responsibilities to clients seeking services; works closely with Program Manager in meeting state requirements for reports and documentation. Functions as a positive team member. Must become a notary.
