Best of Winchester GuideThis year the FAN resource guide has been transformed into a Best of Winchester format in order to take into account the valuable input we have received from our members from a variety of sources. This year we have integrated the extensive research from past FAN resource guides along with member's recommendations from the FAN discussion board as well as from a survey that was sent out to all FAN members in the spring. We have developed a system to note when a FAN member has provided a specific recommendations by adding the number of \"fans\" next to a particular company/activity/service or program's entry in the guide, ie., (1 fan). We hope our member's enjoy this guide as well as the FAN Membership Directory, and that you find it to be a useful tool for you and your family.
Community ConnectionOne of the hopes many of us share is that we live in an area with a strong sense of community; that we come together to work towards common goals, communicate with each other, and teach our children the importance of giving to others. FAN seeks to foster these goals through our community connection committee. This committee facilitates initiatives that take place either during regularly scheduled FAN events or on individual projects. A few of our past projects include food, toy and clothing drives, pet care donations for an area shelter, collection of backpacks & school supplies for kids in need, and the organizing of Winchester¢??s First Eco Festival in collaboration with Sustainable Winchester. We also seek to develop and nurture relationships with our families and our senior citizens through our Intergenerational Events at the Jenks Senior Center. We have many other exciting initiatives this year, and we encourage you and your family to join us in helping to make a difference
Childrens ProgrammingEach year, the Family Action Network holds several events for our children which quickly become the \"talk of the town\" . These events are mostly FREE for our members and include... Families and Firetrucks - our own local firemen come to share their tools, trucks, and safety tips for a morning. Indoor Exercise Event -A local children's gym shares their space with us for one chilly morning as we all try to escape the winter blues. Music Event -a warm welcoming environment for trying some musical instruments such as the xylophone, saxophone, trombone, and drums. Perhaps you'll find your child interested in something you'd never have thought to introduce him/her to. Valentines Craft - Join us at the library as we craft cards, boxes, and gifts for moms, dads grandparents, and our friends at the Jenks Center. Town Day - a summer morning on the common and throughout the downtown area. Family oriented games are played, prizes won, and a good time had by all. Parents tell us their children often recall, upon passing the common, the cheerful family time spent here that morning. FAN Parent Events sponsors events geared towards parents' interests. Our signature event is the FAN preschool fair and survey. The preschool survey is a collection of detailed information on preschools in Winchester and the surrounding towns that parents' can use as a guide when navigating through preschool choices. We also host a preschool fair where parents can talk to other parent representatives from various preschools.
Parent EventsParent Events is a fun way to get out of the house, meet new people and connect with your friends without the little ones around. Our past event list include book talks on best children's best books, Tricia McEvoy makeovers at Nordstrom, holiday cookie swaps and meeting up at Masa for tapas and drinks. If you are looking for opportunity to meet more people in town and/or just have fun, come try out a parent event function.
Winchesters First Annual Eco FestivalThe Family Action Network of Winchester, in collaboration with Sustainable Winchester, will showcase the concepts of \"Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle\" through fun and engaging children's events, offering unique recycling opportunities and by providing community members with opportunities to learn about how to integrate a sustainable lifestyle within our homes and our everyday lives. The primary aim of the Eco Festival is to educate our community members about the conservation of our natural resources and about innovative alternative-energy technologies and waste reduction practices. Through our children's activities, dynamic exhibits, workshops and stimulating speakers, the Winchester Eco Festival will foster public awareness about opportunities for environmental change. It is hoped that the event will inspire community members to make their homes, businesses and town more ecologically advanced and environmentally sound, while also encouraging activism and volunteerism. This environmental festival is free to the public, thanks to the support of corporations such as Whole Foods Market, REI, Staples and LL Bean, as well as by the support of local businesses including Carole's Kitchen and Bath, Gerrity Stone, Boston Green Realty, Boston Tree Preservation, Local Hero Tech Support, Moriarty & Berty General Dentistry, Pywell Contracting Services and the Anderson Team Realtors. We are pleased to present the opportunity for non-profit organizations, schools, and local businesses to come together to present their environmental message, involvement and programs to an audience of concerned Winchester residents.
HospitalityWant to get involved with FAN, but not sure how much time you have to commit? join the Hospitality List! The Hospitality Group was formed and we are enlisting volunteer chefs to help us in this endeavor. By volunteering to be on the Hospitality List, you may be requested to make a meal for a member in need. Be assured that we are looking to make this convenient and worthwhile for everyone involved. We hope to have an active list, so that we are not contacting the same members repeatedly to make meals. In the winter we will incorporate a \"Let's Dish\" night where an extra meal will be prepared to \"stock-up\" our reserves. But we would also like to be able to call upon people to prepare meals with specific dietary needs as they may arise. Please consider placing your name on our list. There is no obligation if you schedule doesn't permit for cooking when called upon, but the more members we have, the more likely we will find a good match when needed. Please send a note to hospitality@fanwinchester.org.
Intergenerational EventsMonthly Intergenerational events are organized in conjunction with the Jenks Senior Center and other members of the local community.
Let's Make a Splash!PROJECT SUMMARY Mission We propose to enhance, beautify and revitalize Winchester’s Borggaard Beach recreational area to make it into a year round, barrier free facility in order for it to become a community gathering place for all Winchester residents. Our primary goal is to install an inclusive automated, interactive splash park area for children. We also aim to update the current playground amenities to include accessible play features to promote inclusivity as well as add additional interest for all ages. During this time of economic uncertainty, a multi-use facility would provide a low cost accessible recreational activity for families, defray the substantial loss the Town of Winchester incurs in the beach’s operational costs, and help support our local economy by retaining residents’ presence, and shopping dollars, within our community. The Challenge This recreational area, which could be a beautiful and vibrant community gathering place, is currently underutilized. There is a common perception amongst residents that the water is not safe for their children, that the level of amenities (shade, playground) are lacking, and dislike the sense of desolation - people want to be where they know they will find social interaction for themselves and for their children. It is common practice for those Winchester residents, who can afford it, to pay over a thousand dollars for a summer membership to another town’s pool as they wait the 5-7 years it takes to gain access to one of the town’s private swim or boat clubs. Others, many of whom may not be able to afford these membership rates, simply pay daily admission fees to neighboring town’s water or spray parks. As we give our money to other towns for their recreational facilities, we are also visiting their grocery, retail, and dining establishments which means lost revenue for our local businesses. Winchester and its local business community are losing out on income that could be generated by providing residents a reason to stay, and shop, local. There are many lower income residents in Winchester who cannot afford to join neighboring pools and/or our private clubs or vacation on the Cape. The town beach is the only relief from heat if you do not have a/c. We would deem our efforts a success, if we were to see seniors and children from the low income housing, located in close proximity to the beach, being able to cool off on a 100 degree August day.
FANSplash UpdateFANSplash May Not have Received the PARC Grant, But has gained Town Wide Support! WINCHESTER, Mass., November 11, 2009 – FANSplash and the Town of Winchester has received the official word that they did not receive the State PARC grant. While they were disappointed, FANSplash has been able to return to what has always been their core focus- the Splash Park! It is well within their sites- if they raise $167,000 by April, Winchester can have a splash park this summer! FAN would like to extend their gratitude to the town not only for their initial assistance in compiling the grant, but for the incredible generosity they have shown in terms of their support, guidance and time, helping us define the next planning phase of their project.
Waiting for the Final Wave's CrestBy Brad Petrishen, Winchester Star Winchester, January 7th, 2009 The Family Action Network’s Splash Park project (FANSplash) has received a number of donations in recent weeks but still needs $90,000 in additional donations by March in order to have Borggaard Beach fitted with a splash Pad in time for summer. “FANSplash would like to express its gratitude for the dedication and generosity shown by the various segments of the Town of Winchester,” FANSplash Chairwoman, Elizabeth Angelino wrote in a press release. According to Angelino, the Arthur Griffin Foundation has pledged to match up to $15,000 in donations received or pledged in support of the project before April 1, 2010. “FANSplash is grateful for their generosity, and for their continued support of beautification projects in Winchester.” Angelino also thanked the Borggaard family for its pledge of $1,000 for the project. The beach was named after Clarence Borggaard, a 39 year Town Meeting member, past Director of the Boat Club and active Rotarian who had a great interest in revitalizing Winchesters’ swimming facilities. BookEnds has also donated $1,000 to the project, Angelino said, and the Chocolate Truffle, Cups and Cones and Café Dolce have all participated in “FANSplash Days” that helped raise fund for the park. Angelino thanked the Department of Public Works for the removal of invasive growth along Palmer Street, which she said will not only open up a beautiful view of the pond and beach, but will also halt the progression of the invasive plants that were chocking the existing old growth beautiful trees. She said the removal will also free up additional parking spaces for use in the summer. What to expect FANSplash was forced to temper its renovation for the site last month when it learned it did not receive a $500,000 grant from the Executive office of Environmental and Energy Affairs. The project, which was originally budgeted at about $930,000 and scheduled to be done in one phase, is now scheduled to be done in piecemeal fashion, with the first phase costing about $163,200. “The project isn’t really being scaled back, it is actually just returning to what FAN’s primary goal always was: to revitalize our towns only publically accessible water based recreational facility by implementing a splash park that would become an inclusive gathering place for all our residents,” Angelino said. “The other elements such as the playground (and) bathhouse

FANSplash: We have 6 weeks left to make a difference! There has been an outpouring of financial support for FANSplash this week, but we still need your help to get us to the finish line! We have generated about $40,000 this week for FANSplash! Wincester's Winter Fiesta was a major contributor to this amazing feat. One of our honored guests at the Fiesta was Paula Swartz. It was her husband, Randy Swartz, who had inspired Clarence Borggaard to lead the last revitalization efforts. We would like to thank her, as well as the Colvin and the Dobbelar Families, who purchased naming rights to splash park elements! We have also received, this past week, generous donations from John Moriarty & Associates, Costello Funeral Home, G.R. Nowell and Son and Carole's Kitchen and Bath, and 6 more of Clarence Borggaard's relatives! We have till May 1 to raise the remaining $80,000 needed to build the splash park they way our community and children would best enjoy it. If we do not raise the full amount, a more simplistic park will be built, but we now have the chance to make a positive impact that will help return this area to the vibrant community gathering place that it once was. We feel this project is uniquely worthy of your financial support because: · It is focused on polishing a true hidden gem that exists in our town. For Winchester, as one of the 5th smallest towns in Massachusetts to allow so much prime recreational land to lay fallow is a shame. · This pond is the only public water based recreational facility that exists in our town and the splash pad would provide accessibility to people in two regards- for residents who are physically challenged, but also for the numerous people who cannot afford to join one of the private clubs in town or who are years away from being granted membership to one. · This facility would be multigenerational.
Winchester Winter's Fiesta a Fun Celebration for All!FANSplash and the Winchester Cultural Council would like to thank all of our guests who braved the elements in order to celebrate the arts and raise funds for the Splash Park! The night was filled with great music from the Tequila Amigos and Kevin Anglin from Boston Improv was a fabulous Master of Ceremonies! With Allan Eyden's assistance as our auctioneer, and our guests generosity, we raised over $30,000- which is incredible, especially since we made a concerted effort to keep our admission prices at a minimum! What is also thrilling is that we are able to retain over 95% of the funds for use for our philanthropic efforts and this was solely due to the outpouring of generosity from numerous businesses who donated their services or products. We offer them our gratitude and appreciation. Winchester Wine and Spirits, Peterson’s Party Center, Inc., Metropolitan Linen, Rainbow Balloons, The Boston Beer Company and Carole’s Kitchen & Bath were quick to give, and generous with, their support. We are thankful to Deb's Cookies, Masa, Fresh City, and Not Your Average Joe's, Roche Brothers, Stop and Shop and Dunkin Donuts for providing our guests with delicious food to eat and to the multitudes of businesses who advertised in our event program and who offered Silent Auction items, your contributions made an incredible impact on FANSplash's fundraising- especially in light of the $25,000 matching grant awarded to FANsplash by Arthur Griffin Foundation for Winchester! Many thanks are due to the volunteers from Winchester’s Cultural Council and the Family Action Network who embraced the opportunity to collaborate and who then worked selflessly behind the scenes to orchestrate this celebration, (with little time to spare!). Their dedication & effort is apparent in all the details that surround this event and their effort will be evident long past this evening, for both organizations share the same goal: to raise funds to help support the arts and the beautification of our town.

To view it, please visit: http://wincamshows.blogspot.com/ . We have ONLY 8 weeks left to raise the $80,000 needed in order to have the splash pad THIS Summer!! We are so close but we need your help to make sure we can build the splash park of our kid's dreams. You can donate online or learn more about our project at: www.fansplash.org or register for a legacy tile at www.winrec.com!

FANSplash Received Project Approval from Winchester’s ConserIt my pleasure to announce that FANSplash met a major milestone last night, by receiving our permit to proceed with the Splash Park from the Conservation Commission! The Conservation Commission is responsible for administering the Wetlands Protection Act, the Rivers Protection Act, and the Wetlands Bylaw. The Commission is charged by law with regulating activity to ensure resource areas are protected. Under state and local law, resource areas are: land under water & inland banks, wetlands, land subject to flooding or riverfront area. If a proposed project will impact a resource area, a Notice of Intent must be filed with the Commission. A Notice of Intent is an application for review consists of filling out a state form, drawing up a plan, and notifying the public of the intended work. The Commission looks over the project and decides whether, under the law, the project can go ahead. The Commission will then approve an Order of Conditions. This is the actual permit to do the project as long conditions outlined in it are followed. These could include: setting up an erosion barrier between the project and the Resource Area; staying a set distance from the Resource Area; and the like. Our committee has been in constant contact with the Conservation Commission all year in order to ensure we were adhering to their requirements and were following best practices. They have been, and we are so grateful for, the Commission’s phenomenal support all year. We would like to say a special thanks to Elaine Vreeland, Conservation Administrator, who has been a great resource and offered invaluable assistance and guidance. The process of preparing for the Notice of Intent has been such a shining example of what can be achieved through a public/private partnership. Along with our Landscape Architect, Gary Larson, numerous Town Departments were instrumental in gathering the necessary information and for the filing of the Notice, we offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to all involved. I couldn't hold back my tears at the end of the hearing when I heard Mr. Parkhurst, a long time Commission Member say \" I think we're ready to wrap things up\" ... five more minutes of discussion later...and then: unanimous approval! The entire room broke out in applause and hugs were given all around. It was another important milestone that brings us a large step closer to implementation! We are $719 dollars away from being able to include a $2,500 toddler oriented, above
