GLAAD’s Young Adult Media Initiative exists to bring greater media attention of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues to young adults, ages 18-24, highlighting the unique obstacles this segment of the population must face. GLAAD empowers young people who are struggling with their own orientation, and also those that are working to help eliminate discrimination. Another key element of this program focuses on emerging young minds as they make their way through post secondary education and form lasting beliefs about society. Each year, GLAAD accepts 21 college students who complete 12-week internships within various departments across the organization, as well as three fellows who stay with the organization for one full calendar year. Interns and Fellows are paired with staff members who carefully map out projects with specific pedagogical goals and objectives based on the skill set of the individuals, as well as their collegiate curricula.
