HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention in TanzaniaMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Engage community groups in HIV/AIDS education while living with a host family in Arusha, Tanzania. This opportunity teams Volunteers with local community leaders and indigenous organizations to offer week long trainings in HIV/AIDS prevention to urban and rural community groups as well as secondary school students. The trainings include information on HIV transmission and prevention, treatment of opportunistic diseases, life skills, stigma, and the importance of healthy living through good nutrition. During the summer, this program takes the shape of youth day camps that focus on HIV/AIDS education and prevention, youth sexuality, and life skills. Designed to be an interactive way for secondary school students to learn in a fun and creative way, volunteers teach about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, relationships, sexuality, and healthy life skills. Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in TanzaniaMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Educate community groups on Biointensive Agriculture methods, sack gardens and nutrition while living with a host family in Arusha, Tanzania. Learn about and teach organic farming methods and increase food security for rural Tanzanian communities, especially those families affected by HIV/AIDS. GSC promotes biointensive agriculture (BIA), a specialized form of organic agriculture involving the use of double-dug beds, locally available crops, organic compost materials, crop diversification, intensive planting, and water harvesting -- a more viable option for rural Tanzanians than chemical based farming, which requires expensive inputs and is not sustainable. Educate Tanzanian community members in farming techniques; work with community groups to create sustainable small-scale farming plots; work at the demonstration plot at the local agricultural college; assess group capabilities and prepare trainings; provide follow-up support to previously trained groups.
International Health Volunteer in TanzaniaMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Shadow Tanzanian health professionals at a local hospital, engage in capacity building projects at a local health facility and educate community groups on HIV/AIDS while living with a local family in Tanzania. Work with local counterparts to facilitate community workshops on HIV/AIDS and encourage trainees to get tested and adopt safe life style habits. Community training activities during the first June include participating in the HIV/AIDS prevention day camp program. Then, shadow Tanzanian health professionals and engage in community service health projects. Shadowing placements are available in several hospitals and clinics in the Arusha area. In collaboration with one of our local partners GSC has the development of an on-line telemedicine system for rural hospitals to communicate with hospitals in the U.S., Europe and other developed countries. As a volunteer, you will tutor hospital staff in basic computer skills and the use of the telemedicine software.
Community Development Internships in TanzaniaMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Acquire in-depth knowledge of international development through long-term, first-hand experience working with community development organizations while living with a host family in Tanzania. Spend one month facilitating workshops with local Tanzanian counterparts to community groups about issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Awareness or Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security. Then join a local organization in assisting with program development and implementation. Community Development assignment include: assisting with AIDS education and prevention program development; supporting Peer Education Health Clubs with HIV/AIDS prevention training or family subsistence gardens; working with a local community organization like Women In Action or local orphanages; improving and expanding sustainable agriculture programs and demonstration plots; and working with local farmer groups on their own plots and marketing programs among others.
Volunteer Vacations in ThailandMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Engage in an unforgettable cross-cultural learning experience and give back to the local community by volunteering in Thailand. Get acclimated to the time change and climate in Bangkok and see some of the famous sites in the city, and get their first taste of authentic Thai cuisine. Then engage in a one-week cross-cultural orientation and learning experience which explores Thai history, religion, language and culture. After orientation week, teaching English in a local school and/or work at an orphanage. Both the schools and orphanages offer volunteers the opportunity to provide much appreciated services to poor and rural children and no special training is required. Teach English in Schools or to Novice Monks in ThailandMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Support the Thailand Ministry of Educations initiative to provide English as a Foreign Language by teaching students in schools or novice monks in temples while living with a local Thai family. Provide much needed English language training to students in rural and urban areas of Thailand. Volunteers have the option of teaching basic and conversational English in private or public primary or secondary schools or at temple schools to novice monks. Volunteers receive teacher training during the orientation session in Singburi from experienced in-country staff as well as detailed training manuals before embarking on the projects. Topics covered include classroom management, what to expect in the classroom, lesson planning and an overview of resources and activities. Previous teaching experience is not required - just a positive attitude and a willingness to approach challenges with patience and enthusiasm!
Buddhist Immersion Volunteers Program in ThailandMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Experience temple life and Thailandâ??s rich cultural traditions while teaching English to novice monks at a Buddhist temple in Thailand. Be fully involved in temple life by joining in on meditations, chantings, or ritual celebrations while teaching novice monks English. Teaching English is essential for the success of these young monks who often receive all their educational services through the temples. Typically they spend a 1-2 years as monks and then return to their towns or villages as secular citizens. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to converse with monks and gain valuable insight into Buddhist culture. Participants in this English teaching program have the option of living with a local Thai host family near the temple or at accommodation on the temple grounds.
Orphanage Care Volunteer in ThailandMonday, October 20, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Bring light and happiness to disadvantaged youth in Central Thailand by volunteering in an orphanage in â??The Land of Smiles.â?? Global Service Corpsâ?? Orphanage Care volunteers work with orphanages in Central Thailand to improve the lives of disadvantaged children. Most of these children have lost their parents, or are from impoverished families or disenfranchised minority groups. Volunteers split their time between different duties at the orphanage. Volunteers spend time providing companionship and recreational activities for the orphans by helping organize activities and coaching sports. Additionally, volunteers assist teachers at the orphanage in teaching basic English classes. In the orphanages, you will not only be a teacher but also a mentor and friend while having the unique opportunity to live on the orphanage grounds with the children and staff.
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education in ThailandSunday, February 01, 2009 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Help educate youth about HIV and AIDS while living with a host-family in Thailand! Global Service Corps has responding to the growing need for HIV/AIDS and sexual health education in Thailand by providing both Day Camp opportunities and school-based learning activities for Thai youth. The \"English for Life\" Day Camps are held throughout Thailand and focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, sexual health education, and life skills training. GSC also provides follow-up HIV/AIDS Education assistance throughout the year in secondary schools that have participated in the camps. Volunteers work with local teachers to plan activities for 7th to 12th grade students, providing them with basic knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention methods. Lessons are conducted in English, to allow students to practice their English skills. GSC is in the process of evaluating this program in order better to serve the community. This program is scheduled to launch in Summer 2009.
International Health Volunteer in ThailandSunday, February 01, 2009 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Learn about the Thai health care system by engaging with Thai health professionals in the field! The Thailand International Health Program gives volunteers a unique insight into the Thai healthcare systemâ??s organization, structure, clinical procedures and administration. Program participants spend two weeks participating in community development projects that focus on either HIV/AIDS education or teaching English. Then, volunteers are posted at local hospitals around Thailand where they have the opportunity to shadow Thai doctors and nurses while observing examinations, surgeries, births, and the treatment of tropical diseases. The International Health Program provides a unique educational and observational opportunity. GSC is in the process of evaluating its HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program in order better to serve the community. This program is scheduled to launch in Summer of 2009.
