Literacy (Hillsborough Reads)To help students achieve academic success, the Hillsborough Education Foundation and Communities In Schools administer Hillsborough Reads, an early intervention reading program for struggling readers in grades Kâ??3. Through this program, struggling readers receive 1.5.hours of tutoring a week from AmeriCorps tutors trained in the Building Better Readers curriculum. Last year 385 students received 11,062 hours of one-on-one tutoring.
MentoringThe Hillsborough Education Foundation administers the Take Stock In Children scholarship and mentoring program for middle and high school students. Mentors encourage students to be successful in school. Having a relationship with a positive adult role model helps students succeed, achieve, and graduate from high school. As a mentor, you can provide a role model for students who have a scholarship for college, but may not have a family member who has attended college to help them.
Teaching Tools for Hillsborough SchoolsTeaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools (TTHS), started in 2002, works to ensure that students in Hillsborough County have the basic tools for learning by bringing the community's surplus supplies and merchandise, at no cost, into the hands of teachers and school children. TTHS's Supply Store program offers a simple solution for the community to get involved with improving the school conditions students face each day. With surplus donations, TTHS can provide educational tools as well as other basic necessities which are not listed on school budgets. By transferring surplus supplies from businesses to classrooms, teachers are reminded that the community truly respects and appreciated the difference they are making in the lives of at-risk students.
Classroom GrantsEvery year the Hillsborough Education Foundation makes funds available to Hillsborough County educators to create new and innovative educational programs that could not normally be accommodated by the typical school budget. A classroom grant can make learning exciting for teachers and students because it gives teachers an opportunity to be creative and innovative.
School Excellence GrantsSchool Excellence Grants have reached thousands of students; raising reading scores, improving literacy and media centers, improving student attendance and increasing parent involvement. As matching grants that school administrators may apply for at the beginning of each school year, the grants are for up to $5,000 and are designed to address needs which impact large segments of the school community (a grade-level, curriculum area, school-wide, etc.)
HCPS Employee ScholarshipsThe Hillsborough Education Foundation has developed a scholarship program for employees of the school district in conjunction with such partners as Citi. The CitiScholars scholarship program provides educational opportunities for promising instructional support personnel, which includes para-professionals, aides, assistant teachers, clerical, technical staff, etc. This program serves as a resource to bring this current group of employees into the teaching force, which will aid in the reduction of the teacher shortage in the Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS). To date, 72 persons have participated in the CitiScholars program, with approximately a 45% scholarship renewal rate.
INVESTThe Hillsborough Education Foundation, working with the business community and Hillsborough County Public Schools are addressing this considerable need, by raising funds to be used for INVEST Career and Technical Scholarships. Many of the students are able to receive financial aid to assist with tuition, but such assistance does not pay for additional required expenses. Examples of Additional Costs for Technical and Career Students: Textbooks & School Supplies Auto Technician â?? Basic Tools Drafting Kits Drafting Equipment â?? Basic Planimeter Medical Scrubs, Uniforms Stethoscopes Specialized Uniform Footwear Construction/Trigonometry Calculator Construction Hard Hats, Goggles, Tool Belts Certification/License Exams
Project SUCCESSProject SUCCESS is a collaboration with the Eckerd Family Foundation which is designed to assist students at Bowers Whitley Career Center (BWCC) to be successful. The bottom line with Project SUCCESS is that we can tell the students at the career center that we will help them with financial hurdles to complete their high school education and to either begin their career (via the career training they received at the career center) or further their education (via community college or technical education center).http://www.educationfoundation.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/Schools.INVEST_Success
Technology Matching GrantsThe Hillsborough Education Foundation provides matched funding to help the schools with the challenge of keeping up with technological advances. This unique program is a grant jointly administered by the Foundation and the Hillsborough County Public School District. The additional technology allows teachers to get even more creative with teaching techniques.

The Hillsborough Education Foundation hosts a number of large recognition programs every year to honor individuals and groups who support and display excellence in education.
Teacher Recruitment and RetentionHillsborough County is growing at an accelerated rate, which is cause for new schools to handle the steady influx of students. Currently Hillsborough County public schools serves 190,000 students. School construction is occurring rapidly and the need for new teachers is averaging 1,500 due to growth, attrition, and the class size amendment. Florida colleges and universities can only train and graduate so many teachers per year and other counties in Florida are also expanding rapidly and competing for the same graduates. To remain competitive in the recruitment process, the Hillsborough Education Foundation has implemented programs to attract new teachers to the area, as well as provide training and present community benefits to help them transition comfortably into the Bay Area.
Teacher Interview DaysHillsborough County Public Schools, with the assistance of the Hillsborough Education Foundation, plans a recruitment fair each year, to help meet the district's increased demand for educators. Principals along with District Administrators participate in screening and interviewing hundreds of candidates during this two day period. The School District Office of Teacher Recruitment is responsible for recruiting 1,500 new teachers to our area and our district annually. Our local colleges and universities can only supply a fraction of the demand; consequently we recruit from the entire country. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
New Teacher OrientationHillsborough County is experiencing unprecedented growth requiring the hiring of new teachers every year. Once hired, these new educators spend four days in orientation sessions at an area high school. They have large group sessions, as well as breakout sessions divided by grade level or subject area. During the day the attendees are able to peruse the sponsorsâ?? vendor fair. This is an excellent place to acquaint new members of the community to area businesses and services. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
