Adult Literacy and ESOL Tutors (Boston)Tuesday, September 30, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is about bringing people together to make a real difference. Become an LVM tutor and provide free, confidential and individualized tutoring to an adult in basic literacy and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Prospective volunteers attend a 2-hour volunteer orientation and successfully complete an 18-hour tutor training in either basic literacy or ESOL prior to being certified and matched to work with an adult. Volunteers then work one-to-one with an adult student for 2 hours per week for a minimum of 9 to 12 months. Tutor/student pairs schedule their own sessions for mutually convenient times and public places in the greater Boston area. Volunteer orientations are scheduled for October 7, October 20 and December 9. Contact LVM to sign-up!

Volunteer Recruitment and Support - Commonwealth CorpsTuesday, September 30, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is seeking exceptional candidates to work on a Volunteer Recruitment and Support Project funded by the new Commonwealth Corps. These paid internships/stipended volunteer positions are ideal for energetic and responsible undergraduate and graduate students, mid-career professionals, mothers looking for part-time positions and older adults. Candidates will work with the LVM staff to design and implement a volunteer recruitment and support plan for Boston to recruit more volunteer tutors, retain volunteers for a longer period of time, and create more visibility for LVM. Individuals should have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, be able to work with diverse groups of people, and have a commitment to LVM's mission. Computer skills are necessary. A valid MA driver's license and access to a reliable automobile may be occasionally necessary. Deadline for applying is October 20.

LVM-Boston CoordinatorLVM seeks an energetic, posed individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to coordinate LVM's volunteer tutoring program in Boston to provide free, individualized and confidential tutoring to adults in basic reading and writing, and ESOL. The ideal candidate will have a mature interpersonal style, a positive and enthusiastic attitude and a sense of humor. Candidate must exercise excellent judgment and discretion with confidential materials, have a strong sense of customer service and be a problem-solver. This job is ideal for a recent college graduate or professional returning to the work force. B.A., demonstrated organizational skills, ability to work with diverse groups, willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings and computer skills are required. Experience in adult basic education or volunteer programs is desirable. Salary $28,000-$35,000. Resumes and cover letters accepted until position is filled.
