Cambodia is largely regarded as a source-country for human trafficking. Many thousands of girls and women are trafficked to Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and other neighboring “host” countries to be traded or sold into forced labor and sexual slavery. Fortunately, some young women escape and emerge in countries like Malaysia seeking refuge. In many respects, they’re the lucky ones. However much luck may have allowed them to escape their confines, they all too often fall prey to the revolving door of human trafficking. Put simply – these young women cannot leave their new host country and are often rejected by the authorities they’d hoped would help them. The geo-political reasons may be complex and steeped in cultural differences, however, those differences can be overcome.
