Befriend a Lonely ElderTuesday, September 23, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Become a Friendly Visitor, and befriend an isolated elder or adult with disabilities. Your presence can help an elder feel less lonely and keep life on stable track. Visit once a week or a couple of times a month, make a new friend, and improve the quality of life of an elder!
Help Elders Get to the Doctor'sWednesday, October 08, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2009Going to the doctor's can be nerve-wracking and scary, especially for an elder who may be frail or confused. Volunteer to help elders get to and from doctor's appointments, and help them feel less alone. You can provide the physical or emotional support they need to get to their appointment, navigate confusing hospital corridors or remember to make a follow-up appointment. Volunteer on your own schedule: you can accept requests when you're free. We need volunteers with and without cars.
Exercise with an ElderWednesday, October 08, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2009Volunteer with the Strong For Life program. You'll be trained to assist frail and disabled elders in their own homes with an exercise program designed to increase strength and balance and improve overall health. Many seniors look forward to their exercise time with their new volunteer friend.
Bring your Pet to Visit EldersWednesday, October 08, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2009Volunteer with the PetPals program and bring your pet to visit elders and adults with disabilities in Boston and Brookline nursing homes once a week. The wagging tails and curious noses of the dogs and the purring of the cats bring smiles and laughter to the faces of nursing home residents, many of whom are isolated, lonely, and depressed. MATCH-UP recruits, interviews, and carefully screens volunteers and their pets before they can participate in PetPals. A veterinary behaviorist at the ARL reviews each pet's medical history and screens the pet for temperament, behavior, and reactions to potential stressors. MATCH-UP then trains owners and pets to safely interact with the nursing home residents. Follow-up occurs after visits to ensure that residents, volunteers, and the animals each are benefiting from the program.
Help an Elder with One-Time TasksWednesday, October 08, 2008 - Wednesday, December 30, 2009Volunteer with the Short-Term Assistance program and help out when you're able. Elders may need someone to help read mail, pack for a move, or go on a special outing. Accept requests to volunteer when it's best for you! MATCH-UP volunteers aid elderly and disabled adults in Boston and Brookline with one-time or short-term tasks which many of us take for granted. Some are in poor health or lack the mobility to get many simple tasks done. Others don't have a support network such as family or friends to call on when they need assistance. This is where MATCH-UP volunteers can help.
