The Neponset River Watershed Association was founded in 1967 by citizens who successfully advocated against the extension of I-95 into Boston. Since then, NepRWA has continued its emphasis on bringing together coalitions to protect and restore the Neponset River, its tributaries and surrounding watershed lands. The Neponset River “Watershed” is the area of land that drains water into the Neponset River; it consists of 14 towns and 130 square miles adjacent to and including southwest Boston. The Watershed has undergone an extraordinary revitalization over the last 30 years, with dramatic water quality improvements and a reopening of much of the riverfront for passive recreation. NepRWA uses science-based advocacy, coalition building, education and hands-on implementation to accomplish its mission. Current programs aim to restore water quality and river hydrology, protect natural areas, open up waterfront recreational access, and restore the river through habitat restoration.(more)
