Ally Program (internships with community businesses)New Door Ventures’ Ally program demonstrates the agency’s expertise in combining social responsibility with business acumen. Through Ally, New Door Ventures offers youth clients three weeks of intensive pre-employment training followed by placement in 3 month internships with a wide range of partnering businesses and nonprofits in the local community. After an Ally intern has identified career goals with their case manager they are placed at one of 20 Ally job sites with businesses and nonprofits in his or her field of interest who want to give back to the community by helping New Door Ventures invest in the lives of low-income youth, such as the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA), Ignite Software, Triano Law, Mission Pie, and the Red Ink Gallery. Each week, Ally interns spend 15 hours working at their job sites, 3-5 hours meeting with their case managers, 2 hours in job training workshops, and also receive an optional 2 hours of tutoring for their GED exam or for pursuing higher education. Ally interns are grouped into “cohorts” of 20 youth each, encouraging peer motivation and a sense of community previously unknown to many of our youth participants. As with our Switch program, each Ally intern is also required to attend a life skills workshop at our Youth Space in the Mission district once a month.
Switch Program (Social Enterprise Internships) The Switch social enterprise program places youth in 6 month internships at the two highly successful social enterprises we created specifically for the purpose of providing our clients with on-the-job opportunities to gain the skills and life experience they need to jump start their careers: Ashbury Images and Pedal Revolution. Located in the Bay View, Ashbury Images provides printed and embroidered apparel and custom promotional products for corporate, nonprofit, academic, and other customers. Some of Ashbury Images’ past customers have included such distinguished organizations such as Habitat for Humanity International, the American Cancer Society, Haas School of Business, and even YouTube. In S.F.'s Mission district, New Door Ventures owns Pedal Revolution, a full service bicycle sales and repair shop. According to the Bay Guardian’s 2008 Best of the Bay edition, Pedal Revolution was voted by readers as \"The Best Revolution on Wheels\" citing service excellence and commitment to the City’s vulnerable youth. Switch interns maintain a 20-hour work week, and benefit from 3-5 hours per week of one-on-one support from their New Door Ventures case manager. They are also required to spend 2 hours each month in life skills training workshops at New Door Ventures’ Youth Space in the Mission district. These in-depth workshops focus on important topics such as conflict management, communication skills, resume writing, job searching, interviewing techniques, managing credit, budgeting, and nutrition. For interns seeking to take their GED exam or pursue higher education, New Door Ventures also provides 2 hours of tutoring and educational counseling each week.
Tutoring for SF YouthFriday, March 19, 2010 - Monday, January 03, 2011Young people in our programs are maintaining a job and are encouraged to pursue their goals of further education. For most, that means studying for the GED, alternative high school exams, or City College classes. New Door Ventures is building a competent, youth-sensitive tutor bank available for 1-2 hours per week at times convenient for youth interns. If you are a flexible, relational person who would like to come along side youth in helping them reach their educational goals, we invite you to consider tutoring with us.
