Switch Program (Social Enterprise Internships) Our Switch program(for out-of-school youth or youth enrolled part-time) employs youth part-time at one of its two mission-focused social enterprises, Ashbury Images and Pedal Revolution. During six-month internships, youth receive extensive on-the-job training, develop hard and soft job skills (such as bike repair and being on time to their work shifttime management, respectively), and receive case management support to help them achieve their goals.
Ally ProgramOut-of-school youth ages 16-21 in the Ally program will participate in job internships at community partner organizations for 12 to 15 weeks. Community partners that serve as job sites include local small businesses such as a law firm, an investment banking firm and a florist shop, as well as nonprofit organizations like Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, Glide Memorial Church, A Living Library, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Youth participating in the Ally Program begin with a three-week pre-employment training at New Door and then are placed at their job sites for the next 12 weeks. Interns are also required to participate in weekly meetings at New Door for peer group support and ongoing training, as well as case management meetings.
Life Skills Building and Support ProgramsNew Door offers a wide range of life skills building and support programs to address the unique challenges youth face in their life outside of work. In order to develop and improve their life skills (such as problem solving and navigating safely through an environment), youth clients receive supportive case management that is individualized to emphasize the areas where youth have most need. This may involve activities such as individual tutoring for educational support, coaching on general life skills, leadership development, and referrals to other community resources. Interns in the Social Enterprise and Work Experience Programs are assigned a case manager to provide personalized support on topics ranging from workplace issues to broader life goals to future employment
Supportive Community of Peers and AdultsNew Door offers a supportive community of peers and adults who can support youth and provide increased stability in their lives. Our positive youth development approach reflects the following tactics for a supportive community: a safe, youth-focused space; coaching and mentoring; youth-led activities, peer support, and social networking; and post-graduation involvement and support.
