Camp HeartlandCamp Heartland is the largest camping and care program for children and youth infected or affected by HIV/AIDS in the U.S. Each summer, Camp Heartland invites hundreds of children and youth, ages 7 to 16, to experience hope, compassion, acceptance and understanding at its facility in northern Minnesota and at a rented facility in Malibu, California. At Camp Heartland, campers participate in regular camp activities including canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, arts and crafts, high and low ropes courses, swimming and field sports. Along with the normal recreational programs, campers have the opportunity to discuss their lives with HIV/AIDS with other children and youth dealing with the same issues. Over three-quarters of our campers live at or below the poverty line so the entire Camp Heartland program is provided free of charge. It costs $1,500 to send a child living with HIV/AIDS to camp for a week in the summer.
Birch Family AllianceThe summer of 2008 was the second summer in which One Heartland operated Birch Family Alliance, a camping and care program for entire families impacted by HIV/AIDS from New York City. For two weeks in August, families come to Birch to enjoy a carefree summer camping experience. Children and youth enjoy recreational activities including canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, drama, and field sports while parents enjoy much needed respite. Throughout the year, families also receive home visits from One Heartland's Family Services Coordinator. The goal of Birch Family Alliance is to strengthen families in order to deal with their HIV/AIDS status safely and responsibly.
The National Retreat for Youth Affected by HIV/AIDSEach spring, One Heartland invites over 40 youth impacted by HIV/AIDS to the One Heartland Center for the National Retreat for Youth Affected by HIV/AIDS. At the Retreat, youth learn valuable life-skills including balancing a checkbook, writing a resume, applying for a job or securing college scholarships as they transition into adulthood. At the end of the retreat, youth are paired with a mentor that will help them reach their goals in the upcoming year.
Heartland PartnersOne Heartland wants to extend their 15 years of service to other organizations who serve similar individuals than those who attend Camp Heartland. Through the Heartland Partners program, One Heartland partners with groups who serve children and youth facing significant life challenges. In the past, One Heartland has partnered with Family Focus and served chilldren and youth living in foster care, People Serving People, serving homeless children and youth, the Great Lakes Intertribal Council, serving Native American youth from northern Minnesota, among others. One Heartland looks forward to reaching out to more children, youth and families impacted by difficult life circumstances.
