Donations needed for Therapuetic Recreation AreaPEMHS recently developed a diverse capital campaign project to raise monies to develop a therapeutic recreational area that will permit the disadvantaged and at risk children served by our programs the ability to receive enhanced and expanded recreational activities and recreational therapy so that they will be better able to develop the skills and behaviors for daily living and community involvement and to ease the their transition back to their families and friends. An integral part of each child's therapeutic experience is their participation in recreational activities and recreational therapy. Studies have shown that children who participate in sports are more likely to succeed as adults and recreational therapy has been shown to: - Reduce/decrease the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, tension, sleep disturbances, negative thinking, problem or delinquent behavior, and - Improve or increase competence, retention of skills, socialization, cooperation, communication skills, tolerance for change, trust, family relations, personal responsibility, self concept/confidence, and appropriate use of discretionary time, and - Decrease the lengths of stay by youth in residential and inpatient programs. Children served through PEMHS residential programs have complex conditions that require extended services in order to adequately treat their psychiatric and psychosocial needs. PEMHS is committed to improving the emotional, cognitive, physical, social and leisure needs of children entrusted to our care.
