Porter Academy ExpansionIn an educational environment of cutbacks, higher teacher-student ratios, and reduced programs, Porter Academy has increased its enrollment in 2010 by 10% and is expanding its specialized programs to better meet the unique learning differences of each child. We credit our experienced loving staff, committed parents, and of course, our wonderful students. Over 60% of the teachers have advanced degrees in reading, education, and special education. Every teacher is encouraged to attend the latest and most advanced professional development opportunities. Due to feedback from our parents and the limited middle school options that celebrate students with learning differences, Porter Academy will be expanding to include grades 6-8 in fall of 2010. Our middle school will include the same individualized academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and therapeutic attention that our elementary program includes. Porter Academy works with students who have difficulties with attention, language processing, auditory discrimination, dyslexia, phonemic awareness, grammar/syntax, memory, sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, visual perception, social interactions and self-esteem. Middle school students will additionally receive transitional and social skills needed to succeed in a larger school environment. Porter Academy is now offering (iLs) Integrated Listening Systems daily as part of the curriculum. iLs is a leader in the field of listening therapies. iLs programs effectively “retrain” parts of the brain involved in learning, communicating, and moving. iLs combines auditory training with balance and visual activities. iLs strengthens neurological pathways and improves one’s ability to learn and to process information. iLs uses receptive and expressive programs to integrate one’s visual, auditory, and vestibular systems in order to build a foundation for auditory processing, reading, phonetic awareness, attention, sensory processing, motor coordination, visual-motor integration, and more. Porter Academy is the only school in Georgia to offer this therapy in the context of every school day.
