YMCA Achiever named National Hispanic Recognition Program ScAndresâ?? Curiel is proof the focusing on academics does pay off. Recently, Andresâ?? was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society. His academic success was also recognized by the College Board as a 2008-09 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Scholar. The Pine View High School senior is one of less than 5,000 students nationwide chosen for the honor. To obtain recognition as a Scholar, the student must be of Hispanic/Latino descent, have scored a minimum PSAT score for their region and achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The NHRP was developed in 1983 with the purpose of identifying outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. In addition to similar academic standards, the National Honor Society selects members based on outstanding performance in the areas of leadership, character, citizenship and service. Andresâ?? is involved in the YMCA Achieverâ??s Program and works the Membership desk at the Frank G. Berlin Branch of the Sarasota Family YMCA. The YMCA Achievers Program is for middle and high school students. Participants must sign a contract to participate in program events and educational forums that focus on personal development, college preparation and cultural enrichment. A minimum 2.5 grade point average must be maintained throughout the school year. Those who would like to take part should call 955-8194 ext. 140 or 139. Rotary, YMCA Welcome International ScholarThis school year, 16-year-old Vivian Chang is exploring the American way of life in addition to the regular studies of a high school student. The Taiwan native is attending SMA on a prestigious International Ambassadorial Rotary Scholarship sponsored by the Downtown Sarasota Rotary. The scholarship includes Vivians attendance at the Sarasota Military Academy for one year. In addition, the Sarasota Family YMCA has granted her a complimentary membership during her stay. Rotary member Lee Ann Chang joked that the YMCA membership would help Vivian keep off any extra weight that the American diet may allow the student. According to The Rotary International, the scholarships are intended to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. These scholarships are funded by private grants to then be distributed through The Rotary Foundation and represent a continued faith that todays Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders. Sharks lend a helping hand to Y-READS!On April 30th the Sarasota YMCA Sharks presented more than 200 books to the K-2nd Grade participants of Y-READS! at Emma Booker Elementary School. The books were donated through a book drive held by the national championship team to ensure that the students had books of their own to read over the summertime. “The kids were very enthusiastic about getting to pick out their own books to keep,” said Karen Grybek, Y-READS! site coordinator at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. “We compared the hard work of swimming practice to reading practice and I could see the light bulbs turning on! This was more than a book drive, it was a first hand lesson in goal setting, hard work and perseverance.” Sharks swimmers, freshman Chyna Yelding and senior Johnny Silvers, who recently signed with Penn State, delivered the books along with words of encouragement. Both Yelding and Silvers took part in Y-Nationals last month when the Sarasota team won its fourth consecutive national title. The student athletes also spent the afternoon reading with the elementary school students and imparted the message that in order to become winners they should never give up on reading.
