St. Mary’s Preschool Program provides the highest quality early childhood experience for the 200 three-five year old children attending our schools. 100% of our children live in poverty. Our schools are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We provide a low adult to child ratio (1:5) to ensure that we can focus on the social and emotional, as well as cognitive and physical, development of the children. We have built in support for children and families through our social services. Transportation, food services and public school therapies are provided. Our curriculum is inspired by the preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, hailed to be the best early childhood program in the world by Newsweek magazine. The Reggio philosophy has an image of the child as strong, competent and capable.

Artists are brought in to share their expertise and help the children explore their talent. In addition, each school has an atelier (art studio) where children have the opportunity to work with many materials. Exploration of our world and culture is an important component of the children’s work. Our children at the Thompson building have spent months studying downtown Indianapolis and the culture of our community through numerous field trips and site visits.(more)
