Avanti Center for GirlsThe Avanti Center for Girls provides a continuum of shelter, evaluation and treatment services for females ages 12-18 with emotional and behavioral problems. We assist our residents in gaining the skills necessary to improve their quality of life, the lives of those around them, and to succeed as adults.
Bar None Residential Treatment ServicesBar None Residential Treatment Services provides a variety of evaluation, stabilization, treatment, and aftercare services for at-risk youth who exhibit emotional and behavioral problems. Our goal is to assist program participants in gaining the skills necessary to improve their quality of life, the lives of those around them, and to succeed as adults.
Children's Mental Health Case Management ProgramThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Children’s Mental Health Case Management program offers coordination of services enabling children with severe emotional disturbances to remain at home. Services may include mental health, social, educational, health, vocational, recreational, volunteer, advocacy, transportation and legal services. Each participant’s family is assigned a case manager who assists them in determining what services the child needs, helps the family obtain the services, assesses new needs as the child grows, and coordinates with all service providers who work with the family to keep the services working effectively for the family.
Children's Residential Treatment CenterChildren’s Residential Treatment Center (CRTC) provides intensive residential treatment, in a secure setting, for severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents who suffer primary psychiatric challenges such as mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, self-destructive behaviors, eating disorders, and thought/dissociative disorders. Average length of stay is typically between 8 and 11 months.
Family Treatment Prison Visitation ProgramThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Family Treatment Program’s Prison Visitation and Transportation Program offers children who live in Minnesota the opportunity to visit their mothers who are incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution at Pekin, Illinois (FCI-Pekin). (In the future, visits to other federal Correctional institutions may be added.) The program is intended to preserve and improve the relationship of these children with their mothers, in anticipation of the mothers’ future release and return home. Additionally, the program helps participating children find comfort and constructively manage the many emotions they may experience as a result of having a parent in prison including stress, loss, shame and isolation.
Family Treatment Foster Care ProgramThe Volunteers of America Family Treatment Foster Care (FTFC) program provides residential care to emotionally and/or behaviorally disturbed children who cannot live with their birth parents. FTFC also develops, implements and monitors individualized care plans to meet the unique needs of these children. Additionally, we license, train, monitor and support participating foster home families who provide care to foster children. Our foster homes are located throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area within a 60-mile radius of our program office. Family Treatment Foster Care offers two levels of foster care as follows: --Specialized Foster Home Service --Therapeutic Foster Home Service
Family Treatment Program In-Home ReliefThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Family Treatment Program’s In-Home Relief is designed to provide temporary relief (respite) for parents/guardians by providing in-home care services for children and young adults with varying disabilities and special needs including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, developmental and physical disabilities. This service provides the assistance to enable the child or young adult to remain living in their own family home. Each family is allotted a number of care hours per month or per year. Once a relief care provider is assigned to the family, the family and the provider determines the schedule. Both hourly and overnight care is available depending on what is authorized by the county.
Omegon, Inc. Residential Treatment CenterOmegon, Inc. is a nonprofit, co-educational, dual-diagnosis residential treatment center which offers specialized treatment services for male and female adolescents, ages 12 to 17, who are experiencing serious emotional, social and/or behavioral disorders, combined with the abuse/dependency on mood-altering chemicals. Omegon, Inc., is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and is a member of the Minneota Council of Child Caring Agencies.
Regional Corrections CenterThe Volunteers of America Regional Corrections Center (RCC), which opened in 1984, is a secure detention facility for women and serves as a resource for the growing number of female offenders in the criminal justice system. Our philosophy is based on the belief that women come to our facility AS punishment, but not FOR punishment. This means that we attempt to provide an uplifting and productive experience through relationships with staff, teachers and volunteers with the ultimate goal of avoiding re-incarceration. Typically, women participate in problem solving groups, along with practical accomplishments such as attaining a GED during incarceration.
Residential CenterThe Volunteers of America Residential Center (RC), which opened in 1969, is a 58-bed facility that provides correctional services for men who have been convicted of felonies and are allowed to complete part of their sentences in a community-based, work-release facility. The RC offers participants an opportunity to become accountable, productive, tax paying citizens, while avoiding further involvement in the criminal justice system. Participants are referred to the RC by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Probation Office, or by the Minnesota Department of Corrections Work Release Unit. The program is licensed by the State of Minnesota, and has earned six awards from the American Correctional Association Commission on Accreditation.
Women's Recovery CenterThe Women's Recovery Center (WRC) is a 90-day program for chemically dependent adult women who have who have experienced multiple traumas particularly those associated with a lifestyle of prostitution. WRC is licensed as an extended care residential chemical dependency treatment facility. It is located 15-minutes north of Saint Paul on a secluded, wooded lakefront. Women enrolled in the program receive treatment for chemical dependency and related mental health problems, and receive independent living skills training and housing placement. The WRC enjoys the support of volunteers who provide recreational and educational services, as well as individual mentoring.
Adult High School Diploma ProgramVolunteers of America of Minnesota Adult High School Diploma program offers English Language Learners age 16 years or older the opportunity to acquire English skills and earn a high school diploma. Classes are offered in multiple levels to meet the needs of individual students. Students are assessed on a regular basis to determine when they are ready to move to the next level. The highest level allows students to earn a high school diploma by passing the Minnesota Basic Standards Test (MBST) and creating a portfolio that demonstrates competency in 16 Equipped For the Future (EFF) core academic and work related areas. Charter School Sponsorship ProgramVolunteers of America of Minnesota was the first non-profit charter school sponsor in the nation. Charter school sponsors are responsible for monitoring the academic, financial, and managerial performance of sponsored schools and for holding them accountable for the performance outcomes contained in their charter. While we are not directly responsible for the ultimate success or failure of charter schools we sponsor, we can have a major impact on outcomes by providing strong oversight, accountability and resources to help them succeed.
Opportunity High SchoolOpportunity High School is a contracted specialty school with Minneapolis Public Schools which is open to all students and specializes in meeting the educational needs of English Language Learners. Day and evening classes offer flexibility for students to choose programs that best meet their needs. The school’s caring, committed and qualified teachers are experts in their subject matter. A low student-staff ratio means more one-on-one attention for each student.
SALT High SchoolVolunteers of America-Minnesota Service Adventure Leadership High School (VOA SALT) is a Minneapolis Public Schools specialty school, serving grades 10 through 12, which features an experiential and environmental themed program that focuses on leadership development and community-based service learning. VOA SALT students are typically those who may benefit from hands-on, experiential learning; have a passion for outdoor adventure and environmental activities, and/or may have been unsuccessful in traditional classroom settings.
Phoenix High SchoolPhoenix High School is a State approved Alternative Program located in the Uptown area of Minneapolis. The school serves English Language Learners as well as native English speakers who may need to recover credits. Phoenix High School allows for flexible scheduling and has small classroom sizes. The school’s goal is to increase educational literacy skills of all students, as well as offer language instructional assistance for English Language Learners.
Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health ClinicsThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics offer diverse, culturally competent, high-quality mental health services for children, adolescents, and their families. These services may take place in the clinic office, school or home setting and are individualized to meet the unique needs of each child and their family.
DBT Outpatient Therapy Program for AdolescentsThe Volunteers of America Mental Health Clinics’ DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Intensive Outpatient Therapy Program for Adolescents offers coordinated individual and multi-family group therapy services to youth age 15 to 18 who have severe emotional/behavioral problems, and/or emerging personality disorders and who engage in self-harming behaviors. Our therapy program is designed to be an intensive long-term intervention with an average length of six-months to one-year or longer.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Mental Health ServicesThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Mental Health program offers culturally and language specific mental health services for deaf, deaf/blind and hard of hearing youth (birth to age 22) who experience significant difficulty due to emotional or behavioral problems, and their families.
Deaf & Hard of Hearing Family Focused Therapeutic Services The Volunteers of America of Minnesota Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Family Focused Therapeutic Services Program offers parent education, case management and support services to deaf and hard of hearing parents of pre-school age children who are considered at-risk for child abuse and neglect. Services include individualized parenting skills sessions, violence prevention, crisis intervention and prevention, information and resource referral, advocacy and educational support.
Home-Based/CTSS Mental Health ProgramThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics’ Home-based/CTSS (Children’s Therapeutic Services and Support) Program offers strengths-based, family-centered mental health services for emotionally disturbed (ED), or severely emotionally disturbed (SED) children, adolescents and their families. Services focus on improving a youth’s functioning at home, at school, within the context of the family and/or in the community. Specific Home-based/CTSS Program Services include comprehensive diagnostic assessment, treatment planning with family involvement, individual and family skills building, individual and family therapy.
Mental Health Clinics Outpatient ProgramThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics’ Outpatient Program offers diverse, culturally competent, quality mental health services to children and adolescents who are emotionally disturbed (ED) or severely emotionally disturbed (SED), and their families. Typical emotional and behavioral problems may include anxiety, depression, attention problems, abuse and trauma, parent-child conflict, aggressive and acting out behavior, grief and loss, and school problems and learning. Services take place in the clinic office and are individualized to meet the unique needs of each child and their family.
Senior Mental Health ServicesVolunteers of America of Minnesota Senior Mental Health Services offers age-specific diagnostic and treatment options to address the specialized mental health service needs of older adults. We help with a wide range of problems and behaviors associated with major mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, changes in sleeping or eating habits, confusion, thought disorders, and other issues that cause distress, put a person at risk, or reduce his or her ability to function in the community. Our program serves older persons exclusively, ages 55 or older. We can see individuals in their own homes, or at community sites such as senior centers that have private space for confidential sessions, or individuals may come to the program office in Golden Valley.
Somali & East African Behavioral Health Services ProgramThe Somali and East African Behavioral Health Services Program is a program of the Volunteers of America-Minnesota Mental Health Clinics. The program offers culturally and language specific behavioral health services for Somali and East African youth, who experience significant difficulty due to emotional or behavioral problems, and their families. Our comprehensive program offers intensive therapeutic, skill building and rehabilitative services to help strengthen the emotional, behavioral and social functioning of Somali and East African youth and their families. This includes improving school performance, increasing school attendance and improving their ability to function well within their families and in the community.
In-Home Support ServicesVolunteers of America of Minnesota In Home Support Services offer individualized services to children and adults, which are specifically tailored to support their needs in the home, apartment or other community living situation. These services reinforce personal responsibility and include activities such as daily living skills and community integration. Our trained direct support staff provide a wide variety of skill development opportunities to build independence and choice making. Our qualified professionals also provide behavioral supports and work closely with schools, day programs and/or employers to provide a collaboration of support services.
Services For Persons With Special NeedsServices For Persons with Special Needs offers supportive living services in small residences for adults with developmental disabilities and seeks to promote independence of participants by working with them to enjoy an active, participatory quality of life by fostering opportunities for active community engagement.
Southwest DayEldersThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota Southwest DayElders program offers care and a variety of activities for older adults, age 55 or more, who typically have limitations of mobility, stamina and/or cognitive functioning. Our program offers a warm, safe, environment to support the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of these older adults.
North DayEldersThe Volunteers of America of Minnesota North DayElders program offers care and a variety of activities for older adults, age 55 or more, who typically have limitations of mobility, stamina and/or cognitive functioning. Our program offers a warm, safe, environment to support the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of these older adults.
Hmong DayEldersThe Volunteers of America Hmong DayElders program provides care and a variety of activities to Hmong seniors, age 55 and older, that typically have limitations of mobility, stamina and/or cognitive functioning. Our program offers a safe, culturally appropriate environment to support the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of these older adults.
Assisted Living ProgramsAssisted Living offers services necessary for participants to remain in their current home. Services and supports are offered at designated housing facilities, which include congregate dining, medication set-ups and reminders, assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), comprehensive case management, socialization and activities, housekeeping and laundry, and assistance with travel arrangements.
Geriatric Care Management and ConsultationVolunteers of America of Minnesota geriatric care managers offer high caliber, intensive care management and consultation services for older adults and their families. We provide objective multi-dimensional assessments that clarify an elder’s needs and reduce conflict. We have been helpful to families, attorneys, trust departments and guardians/conservators in providing short-term consultation services and ongoing monitoring and service coordination.
Caregiver Support ServicesCaregiver Support Services offers assistance, information, counseling, and respite services to family members who are caring for an older adult at your home or theirs. The Family Consultant can meet with you to determine what is needed, then either provides services directly to you or works with others to provide those services, which include: Coaching, counseling, information, support and practical assistance Coordination of community resources Respite services, either in the home or at our adult day service
ElderRide TransportationThe Volunteers of America ElderRide program helps seniors, age 60 and older, remain independent and active by providing them with transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, senior dining, senior center activities, recreation, and other destinations within the Minneapolis city limits. ElderRide service is available Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m., and is closed on national holidays.
Experience CorpsExperience Corps engages people over age 50 in boosting literacy and academic performance of children in urban schools and after-school programs. More than 2,000 Corps members in 20 cities nationally, serve as tutors and mentors that help teach children to read and develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed in school and in life. Here in Minnesota, Experience Corps is sponsored by Volunteers of America and Experience Corps tutors work with children in kindergarten through third grade in several Minneapolis and St. Paul schools.
High Rise Social ServicesThe Volunteers of America Highrise Social Service program staff work in 40 of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority apartment buildings to provide case management, information and referral and group services to residents who are age 60 and older and/or are disabled. Our Highrise Social Service staff help residents manage a variety of individual social services matters including economic assistance eligibility (i.e., medical assistance, food stamps and cash assistance), physical and mental health, financial concerns, housing needs and personal crises. Additionally, our staff works with Hennepin County and other community social service agencies to identify appropriate services that will assist residents in continuing to live independently. Our bilingual Somali staff is available to meet the language and specialized cultural needs of our Somali residents. Additionally, staff have access to a language line in order to meet the language needs of all residents.
Hmong Elder ConnectionsVolunteers of America Hmong Elder Connections offers positive cultural, educational and social experiences for seniors of the Hmong community to help preserve their physical and emotional health and well-being. Many Hmong elders feel isolated due to a number of language and cultural barriers, as well as personal difficulties arising from their loss of homeland and family members, their lack of economic security, and normal problems associated with aging. Our program fills a void in the lives of isolated Hmong elders, teaches them about their new country, and gives them a place to find resources and support. Three programs, individual help and support, group activities, and an adult day service, are designed to help Hmong elders develop supports for a new life while celebrating their shared heritage. All Hmong Elder Connections staff is bilingual and all programs are offered in the Hmong language.

Protective ServicesVolunteers of America of Minnesota Protective Services offers telephone consultation, information and assistance, and referrals, as well as multi-dimensional assessments of persons who may be in need of guardianship/conservatorship services. In some circumstances, we can serve as the petitioner to request the court to appoint a guardian/conservator.
RSVP (Twin Cities Metro Area)Volunteers of America of Minnesota sponsors RSVP, which identifies volunteer opportunities for its members, who are age 55 and over, that meet their individual skills, interests, schedule and geographic availability. Make A Difference Day of VolunteerismFriday, October 24, 2008 - Tuesday, December 30, 2008"Make a Difference Day of Volunteerism" at Volunteers of America-Minnesota is a celebration of the nationwide day of service. This year it takes place on Saturday, October 25. People from around the United States will be volunteering with local organizations to help support and uplift their communities. Make a Difference Day will begin with a kick-off at Park ElderCenter (1505 Park Ave S, Minneapolis, 55404) at 8:30 a.m. At the kick-off, volunteers will be given directions to their different project sites. This annual event provides an opportunity for Volunteers of America-Minnesota to raise awareness about community resources and their needs. It also provides a great opportunity for volunteers to engage with us to impact the lives of individuals and communities.
Thanksgiving BagsFriday, November 21, 2008 - Tuesday, December 30, 2008Thanksgiving Bags is Volunteers of America-Minnesota’s annual event to provide Thanksgiving meals to low-income families and individuals in Minnesota. Last year, over 900 grocery bags full of Thanksgiving food were assembled and delivered to the doorsteps of 1,800 people in need. Ways to participate: 1--Volunteer to deliver bags of food to recipients' doorsteps on November 22. 2--Hold a collection drive for one or more of the food items in the Thanksgiving Bags and drop items off at our corporate office at 7625 Metro Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55439 by November 7. 3--Participate in "The Great Turkey Chase" by holding a company or group-wide collection drive for Cub or Rainbow Foods gift cards that will be included in the Thanksgiving Bags so that each recipient can purchase a turkey ($20 suggested amount). Gift cards may be dropped off at our office by November 7. 4--Make a financial donation. 5--Make "Happy Thanksgiving" cards to be included in the Thanksgiving Bags.
