Water for Sudan, Inc. (WFS) drills fresh water pumps for the people of South Sudan. Our goal is to increase the quality of life and health of families in South Sudan by drilling wells located in proximity to the villages to provide fresh, safe potable water. As of May 2009, WFS has installed forty three successful pumping systems in remote villages serving an estimated 129,000 South Sudanese.

%newline%Water for Sudan started installing water pumps in South Sudan in 2005. WFS purchased a two drilling rigs and trained two team of drillers. Future well drilling capacity may be as many as 35 pumps drilled per annual dry season. With each new drill, an estimated 3,000 persons (500 families) receive fresh clean water daily to fulfill their basic needs.

%newline%The pump locations throughout South Sudan and the difficult journey traveled to these areas dictates how many are installed in any particular drilling season. In the 08/09 drilling season, fourteen pumps were installed.

%newline%An area of population concentration is called Bahr al Gahzal. Water for Sudan has installed forty-one wells northwest, northeast and southeast of WAU (also spelled Waw) and TONJ region. Two wells have been drilled near the village of BOR which is north of Juba. (See the attached maps.)
%newline%
%newline%Water for Sudan installs their pumps in these areas because of the high concentration of people. Waw serves as “headquarters” for Water for Sudan. Our work to bring the water to the people in these areas will continue.

%newline%WFS also desires to some drill wells in the Upper Nile region near Ethiopia. This area is even more remote than Bahr al Gahzal. Due to no road pathways and greater distances between the villages, pump drilling challenges are compounded.

%newline%WFS desires to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals to:
%newline%? Eradicate extreme poverty, hunger and thirst,
%newline%? Reduce child mortality.
%newline%? Achieve universal primary education.
%newline%? Improve maternal health.
%newline%? Combat malaria and other diseases,
%newline%? Promote gender equality and empower women, and
%newline%? Develop a global partnership for development to enable community stability.
