Food PantryOur Food Pantry is supplied by the Second Harvest Food Bank, local grocery stores, bakeries, and community donations. The Pantry is staffed primarily by volunteers who pick up more than 400,000 pounds annually of bread, fresh vegetables, dairy and other items daily from local stores. They also bag and distribute more than $600,000 worth of food to more than 2,000 individuals every year. Families and individuals can visit the pantry every week to get fresh food such as bread, vegetables and dairy products, and every other week for staples such as rice, beans, canned and dried goods. We also try to provide special needs food such as baby food, ethnic food, or items for people with nutritional restrictions.

Rotating ShelterOur Rotating Shelter Program in collaboration with 11 churches and one synagogue provides shelter, food transportation, job search apparel and case management to homeless men. The shelter rotates from church to church on a monthly basis. Homeless men who are drug and alcohol free are invited to stay for a maximum of ninety days. The Rotating Shelter offers a safety net where guests can have a place to stay while they look for employment, permanent housing or build up a cash reserve.

Transitional HousingOur Transitional Housing Program owns and operates a housing complex for working homeless men, and homeless women with children. This very-low-income housing serves successful graduates of the shelter program and other qualified candidates referred from other community agencies. Tenants receive budgeting assistance case management and assistance to secure permanent housing.

Below Market Rate - RentalsWe administer the Below Market Rate (commonly known as BMR) rental program for the City of Cupertino. Low-income clients can apply for placement on the waiting list for BMR apartments in Cupertino. Priorities are given to people who work and live in Cupertino. BMR tenants must re-qualify on an annual basis. WVCS also owns and manages Vista Village, 24 units of affordable rental housing on Vista Drive. For more information, to see if you qualify or to apply to the BMR Rental program, please download the application. ALL BMR Rental applicants MUST sign up for a BMR Rental Orientation in order to complete the application.

Below Market Rate - SalesWVCS also screens prospective buyers for homes to be sold at below-market rates. This program enables medium and moderate income families to purchase quality housing at below-market rates in Cupertino.

Emergency Financial AssistanceOur Emergency Cash Assistance Program administers funds provided by various agencies for one-time emergency financial assistance to people with needs in the areas of housing, utility, health, and transportation. Case managers work closely with families and individuals to determine qualifications, needs and capability to stabilize. Cash assistance is not for ongoing support but to help those who face an unexpected financial setback.

Special ProgramsSeasonal Baskets - WVCS works with community groups to provide Spring, Summer and holiday food and treat baskets to help families celebrate the season. Summer Camps - WVCS provides opportunities for low-income senior citizens and children from 7-18 to go to various summer camps. Back-to-School Shopping Spree- In partnership with Salvation Army and Mervyn's Department Store, volunteers chaperone 50 low-income school children who are given a budget to shop for school clothes. Back-to-School Back Packs - WVCS and partner organizations provide school children with back packs filled with school supplies. Thanksgiving - WVCS coordinates the distribution of holiday food baskets. December Adopt-A-Family - WVCS matches individuals, organizations and companies with low-income families so that those families may receive gifts, decorations and a special holiday dinner

Family Resource Program - Southwest PartnershipThe Southwest Partnership is a collaboration that brings together community agencies, child care providers, early education specialists, and parents to develop and execute a three-year strategic plan for children under the age of six in our region. All members meet together once a month to share information, develop strategies, and implement goals. The meeting is usually held from 3:00PM-4:30PM on the last Wednesday of every month at West Valley Community Services. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join!

Family Resource Program - Family Support SpecialistsFamily Support Specialists work with families who have children prenatal to 6 years old. The goal is to ensure that children are happy, healthy and ready to succeed by the time they reach kindergarten. Family Partners will support families by personally connecting them to programs and services based on each family’s specific needs. Assistance and support may include referrals to: children’s development and social emotional screenings, free or low cost health insurance, enrollment in a high quality preschool, child care services, parent education, emergency food and shelter, counseling, job assistance, complying with court-ordered services.

Family Resource Program - Parent WorkshopsWe offer FREE Parent Workshops to parents with children under the age of 6 living in the West Valley Region. Workshops are offered in English, Mandarin, and Spanish. We also offer FREE childcare for parents attending the workshops so that both parents can take advantage of these informative, educational and enriching workshops. Some examples of topics are “Fathers matter,” “Emotional Intelligence for Young Children,” Positive Discipline,” “How to Raise Resilient Children in the Dawn of the 21st century,” and “Effective Communication.” Workshops can be held at any location that is accessible to families in our region. If you have any suggestions for locations and or topics, please feel free to give us your ideas.

Family Resource Program - Community Engagement & EducationCommunity Engagement Specialists reach out to families with young children through planning income-eligible, family friendly events within our region, as well as outreaching in the community through resource sharing. Some of our past events have included “Family Night Out” and our “Free Book Event,” in which we gave way over 5,000 books to income eligible families. We also have “Certified Application Assistants” available to help sign up children for low-cost health insurance.

VolunteerTuesday, August 12, 2008 - Thursday, December 30, 2010West Valley Community Services incorporates over 100 volunteers on a weekly basis to help ensure that services and programs are provided efficiently and consistently to clients and the community. Over 200 volunteers help with various programs on an annual basis, each one donating time and effort to supporting those in need in the community. Our current volunteers assist with our food pantry, picking up food, special programs, shelter programs, and our fundraisers. On an annual basis our volunteers: • Contribute over 6,000 volunteer hours • Assist with distribution of over 400,000 pounds of food annually • Assist over 4,000 clients • Provide 16,280 meals annually to 100 shelter men We are constantly looking for volunteers and encourage those of you who are interested in giving back to the community to consider a donation of time.

DonationsAll of us are feeling the tremendous effects of a weak economy, and steeply rising expenses such as rent or mortgage, food, utilities and gasoline. This year more than ever before, with an over 20% rise in the number of clients requesting food and other assistance from West Valley Community Services, we need your generous support so we can continue to: • Provide emergency assistance in the form of food, clothing, shelter and financial aid • Provide rotating shelter, transitional housing, and low-income housing assistance • Provide family support programs and resources, referrals and case management • Provide clothing, school supplies and holiday gifts for children

Attend FIRST 5 Community Learning Trainings and lead/conduct workshops and presentations on these trainings. 3. Develop and conduct needs assessment, participation and program evaluations. 4. Design and prepare various marketing materials, to include brochures and flyers. 5. Attend meetings as necessary. 6. Meet and collaborate with other FIRST 5 funded agencies in the South West and other regions in the County. 7. Assist in and contribute to the Southwest Partnership, and WVCS Lead Agency role. 8. Maintain updated database of resources and information. 9. Participate in community outreach events. 10. Work occasional weekends and non-traditional hours. 11. Performs miscellaneous agency and job related duties as assigned.
