Sponsor a Child in NeedOur child sponsorship programs in Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, and the Philippines provide the unique opportunity to directly improve the life of a child. We know that sponsorship works as we have witnessed the amazing difference that it makes - one child at a time. Child sponsorship not only addresses the physical and educational needs of a child, but also contributes to family permanency, allowing children to stay with their families in the country in which they were born.
Rayo de Esperanza - A Campaign for GuatemalaThe closure of adoptions has put a new strain on the already impossible situation for at-risk children in Guatemala. Not only will many thousands of additional children be without homes and the prospect of a family, but facilities that have traditionally been supported through international adoption fees will have lost critical funding. This is a critical situation, one exacerbated by an overall worsening economic situation. In recognition of the emergency situation for children in Guatemala, Wide Horizons For Children is launching the Rayo de Esperanza (Ray of Hope) Campaign with a goal of raising $10,000 per month in emergency funding through December 2008.
Humanitarian Aid in IndiaIndia is home to more than 1 billion people. A walk down one of Mumbai's streets will reveal contradictory scenes of amazing affluence and heart-rending poverty. In fact, despite strong economic growth in the last decade, India has the world's largest disparity between the rich and the poor. Most affected by poverty and social inequality are India's more than 445 million children. To help combat these dire circumstances, WHFC has expanded humanitarian aid initiatives in India. We have been working in Maharashtra, India since 1975, and partner with two outstanding agencies, SOFOSH (Pune) and FSC (Mumbai), to fund projects that fit within our mission. Over the years we have developed a proven track record of successful projects through these partnerships. Our work has focused on child sponsorship and community development through FSC and supporting orphans and abandoned children with special needs through SOFOSH.
Medical Mission in EthiopiaWide Horizons For Children (WHFC) expanded its medical focus in Ethiopia to include physician-led medical trips to the Adwa and Sidama Zones of Ethiopia beginning in November 2008. During this first mission, the team, led by WHFC adoptive dad Dr. Fletcher Wilson and Dr. Stephan Coffman of New Hampshire, spent a week at the Adwa Hospital in Ethiopia's Tigray Region. While there, they completed 40 surgeries despite several days with no water or electricity and limited medical supplies. In addition to performing surgeries, future missions will provide training to local health professionals and traditional birth attendants, and also medical equipment and supply procurement. Help is needed to raise $50,000 for equipment and supply purchases, and subsidization of Ethiopian medical professionals.
Humanitarian Aid in EthiopiaThe needs of children and families in Ethiopia are staggering. Nearly 15% of children are orphans, 800,000 due to AIDS. Four out of five people in Ethiopia live on less than $2 per day, and Ethiopia is listed in the top 10 countries for the worst human development index worldwide. Only 6% of births are attended by a trained attendant, and one in every 13 Ethiopian children dies before reaching a first birthday. Because international adoption is the country's last resort for destitute children, in-country assistance is imperative. In collaboration with our Ethiopian staff and local governments, our humanitarian aid efforts have focused on the key areas of child sponsorship, family permanency, community development, health and education and established programs to make real change possible. Our video, photographed and narrated by one of our adoptive dads, highlights the work being done in the regions of Ethiopia.

India Humanitarian Aid UpdateFamily Service Center (FSC), located in an extremely small space in Eucharistic Congress Building at Colaba, Mumbai, manages Wide Horizons For Children's India Child Sponsorship program, as well as a Community Empowerment Project in Mumbai. During a stay in India this past summer, WHFC staff member Sonali Gupta had the opportunity to visit the Azad Nagar Community and a few of our sponsored children and their mothers.
