YSI After School Science Club YSI After School Science Class The After School Science Club curricula are designed to complement California State Science Standards, which means YSI programs supplement and support what each child should be learning in science. Each week's subject matter is different and include specific activities, experiments and crafts developed for the monthly science theme, suitable for each age group. At a Glance: Suitable for Grades: Pre-K - 5th Schedule: Once a week. Choice of Wednesday OR Thursday. Times: 3:30-4:45pm. YSI Summer Science CampYSI offers Summer Science Camps for children age 3 1/2 to entering 6th grade at our Science and Nature Centers in Alum Rock, Sanborn and Vasona Parks. Science Camps are for one week and meet for half a day. Extended camp option available (1-5p.m). Camps run from June 14 through August 13, 2010. Over 35 camps to choose from! Animal Friends, Bugology, Creek Week, Indian Summer, Science Sleuths, Phunky Physics, Radical Reptiles, Curious Chemistry and many more. Youth Science Institute Summer Camp AideMonday, June 14, 2010 - Friday, August 13, 2010Camp Aides serve as teacher's assistants for week-long outdoor morning day camps varying in length from 2.5 to 4 hours each day. Camp Aides start work promptly at 8:30a.m and work until either 12:00p.m. or 1:30p.m. depending on the age group of the campers. Summer Science Camps meet Monday through Friday, beginning June 14th and concluding August 13th. Camps take place at each of YSI’s three Nature Centers (Vasona, Sanborn, and Alum Rock parks). Aides may be hired to work at one or more centers. NEW this year: Extended Day Camp. Extended Day Camp Aides work from 12:30p.m. – 5:30p.m. Qualifications Previous experience working with children is a must. Aides must have their own transportation. Aides may be as young as 14 years of age, provided they are mature and responsible. Aides should be comfortable near live animals including: reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and insects, capable of sustaining physical activity including lengthy nature hikes, and be capable of carrying camp boxes and supplies up to 25 pounds. Interest and enthusiasm for natural history, science, and outdoor education is also a plus. Previous volunteer experience is helpful. Responsibilities • Report promptly and be appropriately dressed by 8:30 a.m. each day. • Greet campers and their parents when they arrive at camp. • Sign in campers in the morning and drop off, and sign them out at pick up. • Assist teacher by helping prepare materials and campsite each morning. • Clean camp area and kits after camp each day. • Actively assist in supervising up to 16 children each day. • Help with all crafts, experiments, outdoor and indoor games and activities. • Help supervise the children at all times. • Be proactive at all times, anticipate the Instructors needs and take action. Volunteer Commitment • Aides must commit to volunteer for a minimum of three weeks, Monday through Friday; weeks do not have to be continuous. Camp Aides that are interviewed and hired must attend a Mandatory Camp Aide training. Application Procedure • Interested Camp Aides must fill out a YSI Camp Aide application. YSI Adjunct Science InstructorYouth Science Institute (YSI) is a nonprofit Silicon Valley leader in hands-on science education. We partner with nature to teach science to 30,000 pre-school through 12th grade students annually. YSI school programs, after-school programs, and summer camps bridge today’s critical science education gap to inspire enthusiasm for science and a love of learning. YSI’s programs cover a variety of topics and take on a variety of forms - from nature hikes on our local trails, to making lots of noise in a study of the physics of sound, to indoor live animal programs where students get to touch snakes, turtles, and more. YSI programs are hands-on, experiential, and inquiry based. Responsibilities: *Teach hands-on environmental, biological, and physical science programs to pre-K – 12th grade students *Teach children in an engaging and enthusiastic manner * Read and understand program curricula * Ensure the safety and well-being of children *Exhibit maturity, diplomacy and common sense in working with parents, children, and staff Desired Qualifications: *Ability to teach children grades pre-K through 12th *Degree in science, education or environmental studies preferred; similar coursework is helpful *Excellence in the following skill areas: Written, verbal and visual communication; planning and implementation; working independently, and working collaboratively * Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service * Self-motivated, flexible and energetic * Willingness to learn new skills * Personable individual who enjoys working with the public * Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds for short distances * Ability to sustain physical activity, such as hiking * Posses a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and have access to a car Terms of Employment * This is an on-call position. * Salary range is $12.60 to $14.70 per hour depending on experience and education. * Any offer of employment is contingent upon finger printing, background check, and TB test.
